Pandora's Box fits a white centre and a green margin into every leaf of a miniature hosta. The pale middle shines against the darker edge, which makes the plant easy to spot in a shady corner.
Grow it where you can look down into the leaves: a bowl on a shaded table, a trough by the door, a rock garden pocket or the margin of a path. It prefers to be spared the hot afternoon sun. Bigger varieties with pale centres are among our white and cream hostas.

Design & companions
Hostas make an excellent ground cover for shade: planted closely, their leaves meet and suppress weeds from late spring until autumn. Choose medium-sized, vigorous varieties, plant them a little closer than in a border, mulch the gaps until the leaves close, and expect full cover after about three seasons.

A good shade border is built in layers: large hostas and tall partners at the back, medium hostas in the middle and small ones at the front. Repeat a few varieties in groups of three or five, contrast broad hosta leaves with fine ferns or grasses, and add spring bulbs for colour before the hostas wake.

Planting
Yes, hostas can grow under trees, but the soil there is dry as well as shady, so plan for water. Choose thick-leaved or plain green varieties, plant small divisions in pockets between the roots without piling soil over them, mulch well and water deeply whenever it is dry, all through the first growing season.
