Hands Up is a small hosta, new in our range, with thick dark green leaves edged in cream. The bright margins outline each leaf, and the plant stays neat enough for a pot on a shady terrace.

Its compact shape suits a pot by the door, a rock garden or the edge of a path; just keep the hot afternoon sun off the cream margins. Browse the rest of our new hosta varieties.

At a glance

  • Leaf colour: dark green centre, cream margin
  • Size: small
  • Light: shade or partial shade, out of hot afternoon sun
  • Good for: pots, rock gardens, the front of a border
  • Features: thick leaves
  • Pack: 2 plants of the same variety, from the Netherlands
  • Arrives as: bare-root plants
  • Shipping: 1 March to 1 July; order all year round

Planting and care

  • In the ground, allow about 30 cm per plant; in a container, make sure Hands Up has drainage holes beneath it.
  • Give the cream-edged leaves shade or partial shade, and keep them out of the hot afternoon sun.
  • Pots need regular watering, since their compost dries out before the soil in a bed does.
  • Look over Hands Up for slugs and snails whenever new shoots appear in spring; in a pot that takes only a moment.

Our hosta planting guide covers every step, from soil to winter.

Covered by our 100% growing guarantee: if a plant does not grow although you followed our care advice, we replace or refund it.

How to plant?
  1. Choose a spot in shade or partial shade.
  2. Dig a hole about twice as wide as the roots and mix in some compost.
  3. Place the plant so that the crown, where the shoots start, is level with the soil surface.
  4. Fill the hole, press the soil gently and water well.
  5. Keep the soil moist, especially in the first year.
  6. Protect the young shoots from slugs and snails in spring.
