The leaves of Blue Umbrellas owe their blue to a fine coat of wax, and on a large hosta that cool colour covers a good stretch of ground. It is a plant to build a shady planting around.

Blue Umbrellas is a large hosta and needs 75–100 cm between plants. A single plant can fill a specimen spot on its own.
Its blue comes from a fine coat of wax on each leaf. Shade helps Blue Umbrellas keep that colour at its strongest.
Yes, Blue Umbrellas grows in partial shade as well as in shade, although the leaves look bluest in the shadier position.
Varieties
The best blue hostas range from the miniature Blue Mouse Ears to giants such as Big Daddy and Blue Angel. Their blue comes from a waxy coating that is thickest in spring and wears off in strong sun, heat and heavy rain, so plant them in shade or morning sun and water gently at the base. Varieties with a thick wax coat keep their colour longest.

Propagation
Divide a hosta in early spring, when the pointed shoots are just breaking through, or in late summer as a second choice. Lift the whole clump, cut it with a sharp spade or knife into pieces that each have roots and one to three healthy buds, replant them at the same depth straight away and water well.
