Big Daddy is a giant hosta with thick, puckered blue leaves. Like all blue hostas, it owes its colour to a fine waxy coating on the leaves. It has good slug resistance.

One of the big ones – plant it where it has space to spread and it will steal the show.

At a glance

  • Leaf colour: blue
  • Size: giant
  • Light: shade to partial shade – the blue colour is strongest in shade
  • Good for: a specimen plant or the back of a border
  • Features: thick, puckered leaves; good slug resistance

Planting and care

  • Plant in shade or partial shade to keep the blue colour as long as possible.
  • Use humus-rich soil that stays moist but drains well, and space the plants about 100 cm apart.
  • It has good slug resistance, but keep an eye on the young shoots in spring.

How to plant?
  1. Choose a spot in shade or partial shade.
  2. Dig a hole about twice as wide as the roots and mix in some compost.
  3. Place the plant so that the crown, where the shoots start, is level with the soil surface.
  4. Fill the hole, press the soil gently and water well.
  5. Keep the soil moist, especially in the first year.
  6. Protect the young shoots from slugs and snails in spring.
