Barbara Ann joins our range as a large hosta with blue leaves and a white edge. Blue and white make a cool, clean combination for a shaded garden, and the plant is big enough to stand on its own.
Give it a specimen spot or a place at the back of a border, and surround it with ferns, astilbes or other hostas. Keep Barbara Ann out of hot afternoon sun; shade keeps its blue longest. Both our new hosta varieties and our blue hostas include it.
Our hosta planting guide covers every step, from soil to winter.
Covered by our 100% growing guarantee: if a plant does not grow although you followed our care advice, we replace or refund it.

Barbara Ann needs the space of a large hosta: 75–100 cm between plants, or a specimen spot of its own.
Pick a shaded or half-shaded place without hot afternoon sun. A specimen spot or the back of a shady border suits its size.
Ferns, astilbes and other hostas grow well around Barbara Ann and let its white edges stand out.
Varieties
The best blue hostas range from the miniature Blue Mouse Ears to giants such as Big Daddy and Blue Angel. Their blue comes from a waxy coating that is thickest in spring and wears off in strong sun, heat and heavy rain, so plant them in shade or morning sun and water gently at the base. Varieties with a thick wax coat keep their colour longest.

Design & companions
A good shade border is built in layers: large hostas and tall partners at the back, medium hostas in the middle and small ones at the front. Repeat a few varieties in groups of three or five, contrast broad hosta leaves with fine ferns or grasses, and add spring bulbs for colour before the hostas wake.

Design & companions
Hostas and ferns are a natural pair: both like moist, humus-rich soil in partial or full shade, and the fine, divided fronds of a fern make the broad hosta leaf stand out. Choose ferns that suit your moisture, give each plant its full spacing and keep fast spreaders such as ostrich fern away from small hostas.
