So Sweet brings three good points together in one compact hosta: green leaves with a creamy-white edge, scented summer flowers and a better tolerance of sun than most.
American hosta growers named it Hosta of the Year 1996. Small to medium in size, it fits a pot on a terrace, the edge of a path or the front of a border, where the scent can be enjoyed up close. Other varieties with scented flowers are in our fragrant hostas.
Our hosta planting guide covers every step, from soil to winter.

Yes, its summer flowers are fragrant, so plant So Sweet where you can enjoy them up close, by a path or in a pot.
More than most hostas: So Sweet grows in partial shade to sun. In brighter spots, water often enough to keep the soil moist.
In 1996. So Sweet earned the title from American hosta growers and belongs to our Hosta of the Year collection.
Planting
Most hostas prefer shade or part shade, but some cope with much more sun if the soil stays moist. Gold and yellow varieties colour best with plenty of light, while blue and white-centred ones fade or scorch first. Even sun-tolerant hostas need afternoon shade in hot, dry weather, and sun tolerance is never the same as drought tolerance.

Planting
Hostas grow best in moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Dig plenty of compost or well-rotted manure into the whole bed before planting: it helps clay drain and sandy soil hold water. Avoid ground that stays waterlogged, mulch every spring and feed lightly, because good soil matters more than fertiliser.

Design & companions
Hostas make an excellent ground cover for shade: planted closely, their leaves meet and suppress weeds from late spring until autumn. Choose medium-sized, vigorous varieties, plant them a little closer than in a border, mulch the gaps until the leaves close, and expect full cover after about three seasons.
