Cream margins run around the green leaves of Silk Road, a large hosta with a clear, two-tone outline. Planted on its own, it draws the eye across a shady part of the garden.

Allow 75–100 cm between plants. Silk Road is a large hosta, at home standing alone or placed behind lower plants in a border.
Green with a cream margin. The light edge makes the outline of each Silk Road leaf easy to follow in shade.
Plant ferns, astilbes and smaller hostas in front of it; Silk Road then forms the tall back layer of the planting.
Design & companions
Hostas make an excellent ground cover for shade: planted closely, their leaves meet and suppress weeds from late spring until autumn. Choose medium-sized, vigorous varieties, plant them a little closer than in a border, mulch the gaps until the leaves close, and expect full cover after about three seasons.

Design & companions
A good shade border is built in layers: large hostas and tall partners at the back, medium hostas in the middle and small ones at the front. Repeat a few varieties in groups of three or five, contrast broad hosta leaves with fine ferns or grasses, and add spring bulbs for colour before the hostas wake.

Propagation
Divide a hosta in early spring, when the pointed shoots are just breaking through, or in late summer as a second choice. Lift the whole clump, cut it with a sharp spade or knife into pieces that each have roots and one to three healthy buds, replant them at the same depth straight away and water well.
