Sagae is a hosta on a grand scale: a giant clump of blue-green, cream-edged leaves that needs about a metre of room. It copes with more sun than most hostas too, so it is not confined to the shadiest corners.
American hosta growers chose it as Hosta of the Year 2000. Its place is as a specimen or behind lower plants in a border; in sun or partial shade alike, keep the soil moist. See more plants for brighter spots in our sun-tolerant hostas.
Our hosta planting guide covers every step, from soil to winter.
Covered by our 100% growing guarantee: if a plant does not grow although you followed our care advice, we replace or refund it.

Yes, Sagae handles more sun than most hostas and can grow in sun as well as partial shade. Where it gets sun, keep the soil from drying out.
Sagae is a giant, so allow about 100 cm between plants and choose a specimen spot or the back of a border.
In 2000, chosen by American hosta growers. Sagae is one of the giants in our Hosta of the Year collection.
Varieties
The best blue hostas range from the miniature Blue Mouse Ears to giants such as Big Daddy and Blue Angel. Their blue comes from a waxy coating that is thickest in spring and wears off in strong sun, heat and heavy rain, so plant them in shade or morning sun and water gently at the base. Varieties with a thick wax coat keep their colour longest.

Planting
Most hostas prefer shade or part shade, but some cope with much more sun if the soil stays moist. Gold and yellow varieties colour best with plenty of light, while blue and white-centred ones fade or scorch first. Even sun-tolerant hostas need afternoon shade in hot, dry weather, and sun tolerance is never the same as drought tolerance.

Design & companions
Hostas make an excellent ground cover for shade: planted closely, their leaves meet and suppress weeds from late spring until autumn. Choose medium-sized, vigorous varieties, plant them a little closer than in a border, mulch the gaps until the leaves close, and expect full cover after about three seasons.
