Monster Ears pairs plain green leaves with two practical strengths: they resist slugs well, and the plant takes more sun than most hostas. It is a medium-sized hosta for gardens where shade is in short supply.

Grow it in a border, as an edging, in a large pot or as ground cover in a group, with ferns, astilbes or other hostas nearby. In a sunnier position, keep the soil from drying out. Other varieties that cope with more light are in our sun-tolerant hostas.

Planting and care

  • Set Monster Ears about 50 cm apart, in partial shade or sun.
  • The more sun it gets, the more water it needs: keep the soil moist and mulch to slow evaporation.
  • Its leaves resist slugs well, though a glance at the spring shoots of Monster Ears is still worthwhile.
  • Enrich the bed with humus before planting Monster Ears, so it stays moist yet drains.

Our hosta planting guide covers every step, from soil to winter.

Covered by our 100% growing guarantee: if a plant does not grow although you followed our care advice, we replace or refund it.
