Cream edges frame the dark green leaves of Karin, a medium to large hosta with good slug resistance. The light rim brightens shady spots, while the deep green centre keeps the clump looking solid and calm.

It fills a shady border generously and is just as content in a large pot. Ferns and astilbes make good neighbours for its cream-rimmed leaves, and so do other hostas. For more varieties that hold up against slugs, see our slug-resistant hostas.

Planting and care

  • Plant Karin 50–75 cm apart so the clump can widen over the years.
  • Site Karin where trees or buildings give shade or partial shade during the hot afternoon.
  • In a large pot with drainage holes, Karin needs regular watering, especially in warm weather.
  • Karin resists slugs well; even so, glance at the young shoots on damp spring evenings.

Our hosta planting guide covers every step, from soil to winter.

Covered by our 100% growing guarantee: if a plant does not grow although you followed our care advice, we replace or refund it.

Hosta Karin: questions & answers

Is Hosta Karin slug resistant?

Yes, slug resistance is good in Karin. Tender spring shoots still tempt slugs and snails, so a quick check as the leaves appear is sensible.

How big does Hosta Karin get?

Karin builds a medium to large clump of cream-edged leaves, so leave 50–75 cm between plants in a border; a single plant can also fill a large pot.

What can I plant with Hosta Karin?

Ferns, astilbes and other hostas go well with Karin. Its cream-edged dark green leaves add light between their foliage.
