Early to emerge and quick to grow, Hi-Class is a hosta of medium size with green leaves finished in a white edge. The leaves have heavy substance, the plant shows good slug resistance, and it copes with more sun than most hostas.

That mix suits brighter spots: a border that catches some sun, an open path or a large pot on a terrace, as long as the soil stays moist. A group also makes ground cover. See also our sun-tolerant hostas and slug-resistant hostas.

At a glance

  • Leaf colour: green centre, white margin
  • Size: medium
  • Light: partial shade to sun
  • Good for: borders, path edging, ground cover, large pots
  • Features: heavy leaf substance; good slug resistance; more sun tolerance than most hostas; early, fast growth

  • Arrives as: bare-root plants
  • Shipping: 1 March to 1 July; order all year round

Planting and care

  • Plant Hi-Class about 50 cm apart; a fast grower, it soon closes the gaps.
  • In a sunny position, water often enough that the soil around the white-edged clump never dries out.
  • A layer of mulch after planting holds moisture, which matters most where Hi-Class gets sun.
  • Its heavy leaves resist slugs well, yet the early shoots still deserve a glance in spring.

Our hosta planting guide covers every step, from soil to winter.

Covered by our 100% growing guarantee: if a plant does not grow although you followed our care advice, we replace or refund it.

Hosta Hi-Class: questions & answers

Can Hosta Hi-Class grow in the sun?

Yes, Hi-Class handles more sun than most hostas and grows anywhere from partial shade to sun. The one condition in a bright spot is moist soil, so water before it dries.

Is Hosta Hi-Class slug resistant?

Yes, Hi-Class shows good slug resistance and has leaves of heavy substance. Young shoots in spring are still worth a quick look.

How far apart should I plant Hosta Hi-Class?

Roughly 50 cm. Because Hi-Class emerges early and grows fast, a row or group fills that spacing quickly.
