Calm and cool in colour, Hadspen Blue forms a compact clump of blue leaves. This small to medium hosta has good slug resistance as well.
A row of Hadspen Blue makes a cool edging for a path, and one plant fills a pot or a gap near the front of a shady border. Shade keeps the blue at its strongest. Find other cool-toned foliage in our blue hostas.
Our hosta planting guide covers every step, from soil to winter.
Covered by our 100% growing guarantee: if a plant does not grow although you followed our care advice, we replace or refund it.

Yes, the blue leaves of Hadspen Blue resist slugs well. As with any hosta, the young shoots in spring are the part to watch.
A compact plant of small to medium size; allow 30–50 cm between plants of Hadspen Blue, or give one a pot.
Keep it out of strong light: in shade the leaves of Hadspen Blue show their strongest blue, and partial shade is fine too.
Varieties
The best blue hostas range from the miniature Blue Mouse Ears to giants such as Big Daddy and Blue Angel. Their blue comes from a waxy coating that is thickest in spring and wears off in strong sun, heat and heavy rain, so plant them in shade or morning sun and water gently at the base. Varieties with a thick wax coat keep their colour longest.

Problems & pests
Hostas are not deer-proof: Rutgers University rates them in its highest damage category, and rabbits and voles eat them too. Thick-leaved varieties may be a little less tempting, but only a physical barrier reliably works: a fence, a cage or netting dug in against tunnelling animals. Identify the animal first, because deer, rabbits, slugs and voles leave different clues.

Planting
Hostas grow best in moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Dig plenty of compost or well-rotted manure into the whole bed before planting: it helps clay drain and sandy soil hold water. Avoid ground that stays waterlogged, mulch every spring and feed lightly, because good soil matters more than fertiliser.
