A cream centre inside a blue margin gives Great Expectations leaves of strong contrast, so the light middle stands out against the darker edge. For a medium to large hosta it is also unusually tolerant of sun.

It grows in partial shade or sun, provided the soil stays moist, and fills a large pot as readily as a border. In a border it mixes well with ferns, astilbes and other hostas. See more sun-tolerant hostas.

Planting and care

  • Give Great Expectations 50–75 cm on every side so the clump can widen.
  • In a sunnier spot, water as soon as the top of the soil starts to dry.
  • Choose ground rich in humus and set the crown at the same level as the soil around it.
  • Check Great Expectations for slugs and snails as the shoots emerge, especially in a wet spring.

Our hosta planting guide covers every step, from soil to winter.

Covered by our 100% growing guarantee: if a plant does not grow although you followed our care advice, we replace or refund it.
