Funny Mouse is a small hosta that arose as a sport of Hosta 'Blue Mouse Ears'. The blue leaves carry a white margin, so even a little plant shows a clear pattern in shade.
Little plants are best enjoyed up close, so give it a container by the back door, a gap between stones in a rock garden or a spot at the very edge of a bed. Hot afternoon sun does not suit the blue and white leaves. Other compact varieties wait in our miniature and small hostas.

Somewhere you can see it up close, such as a pot, a rock garden or the edge of a bed. Shade or partial shade is right, as long as the afternoon heat does not reach the blue and white leaves of Funny Mouse.
Varieties
The best blue hostas range from the miniature Blue Mouse Ears to giants such as Big Daddy and Blue Angel. Their blue comes from a waxy coating that is thickest in spring and wears off in strong sun, heat and heavy rain, so plant them in shade or morning sun and water gently at the base. Varieties with a thick wax coat keep their colour longest.

Design & companions
A good shade border is built in layers: large hostas and tall partners at the back, medium hostas in the middle and small ones at the front. Repeat a few varieties in groups of three or five, contrast broad hosta leaves with fine ferns or grasses, and add spring bulbs for colour before the hostas wake.
