A cream margin around a blue leaf gives First Frost the frosted look its name suggests. This compact hosta, small to medium in size, also has good slug resistance.

It received the Hosta of the Year award in 2010 from American hosta growers. Out of hot afternoon sun, it makes a crisp edging for paths and suits the front of a bed or a pot. Our slug-resistant hostas include more varieties like it.

At a glance

  • Leaf colour: blue centre, cream margin
  • Size: small to medium
  • Light: shade or partial shade, no hot afternoon sun
  • Good for: path edges, borders, pots
  • Features: good slug resistance
  • Award: Hosta of the Year 2010
  • Pack: 2 plants of the same variety, from the Netherlands
  • Arrives as: bare-root plants
  • Shipping: 1 March to 1 July; order all year round

Planting and care

  • Plant 30–50 cm apart along a path or at the front of a bed, where the cream edges can be seen.
  • Keep First Frost in shade or partial shade, sheltered from hot afternoon sun.
  • A pot of First Frost needs good potting soil, drainage holes and regular watering, as containers dry out quickly.
  • Its slug resistance is good, yet new shoots in spring are worth a look.

Our hosta planting guide covers every step, from soil to winter.

Covered by our 100% growing guarantee: if a plant does not grow although you followed our care advice, we replace or refund it.
