Elegans is a large hosta, so plant it 75–100 cm from its neighbours. With that room it can stand alone as a specimen or anchor a border.
The blue comes from a fine waxy coating and is strongest in shade. Give Elegans shade or partial shade to enjoy the colour for as long as possible.
Ferns, astilbes and other hostas all suit Elegans in a shady border, where its blue leaves give them a calm background.
Varieties
The best blue hostas range from the miniature Blue Mouse Ears to giants such as Big Daddy and Blue Angel. Their blue comes from a waxy coating that is thickest in spring and wears off in strong sun, heat and heavy rain, so plant them in shade or morning sun and water gently at the base. Varieties with a thick wax coat keep their colour longest.

Choose ferns that suit your moisture, give each plant its full spacing and keep fast spreaders such as ostrich fern away from small hostas.

Propagation
Divide a hosta in early spring, when the pointed shoots are just breaking through, or in late summer as a second choice. Lift the whole clump, cut it with a sharp spade or knife into pieces that each have roots and one to three healthy buds, replant them at the same depth straight away and water well.
