With good slug resistance, Bullet Proof is a hosta whose cool blue leaves have a better chance of staying whole through a damp spring. The plant stays medium-sized and keeps its blue best in shade.
Use it to edge a path, plant it through a shady border or give it a large pot; a group of plants makes a ground cover. Ferns, astilbes and other hostas go well with it. It belongs to our slug-resistant hostas, a good place to start in a garden where slugs are common.

Yes, slug resistance is one of the strengths of Bullet Proof. Even so, check its youngest shoots in spring, the stage that slugs and snails like most.
It grows in shade or partial shade. Deeper shade keeps the leaves of Bullet Proof at their bluest.
Edge a path with Bullet Proof, give it a place in a shady border or plant it in a large pot. A group set about 50 cm apart closes into a blue ground cover.
Varieties
The best blue hostas range from the miniature Blue Mouse Ears to giants such as Big Daddy and Blue Angel. Their blue comes from a waxy coating that is thickest in spring and wears off in strong sun, heat and heavy rain, so plant them in shade or morning sun and water gently at the base. Varieties with a thick wax coat keep their colour longest.

Problems & pests
Hostas are not deer-proof: Rutgers University rates them in its highest damage category, and rabbits and voles eat them too. Thick-leaved varieties may be a little less tempting, but only a physical barrier reliably works: a fence, a cage or netting dug in against tunnelling animals. Identify the animal first, because deer, rabbits, slugs and voles leave different clues.

Planting
Hostas grow best in moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Dig plenty of compost or well-rotted manure into the whole bed before planting: it helps clay drain and sandy soil hold water. Avoid ground that stays waterlogged, mulch every spring and feed lightly, because good soil matters more than fertiliser.
