The blue of Buckshaw Blue comes from a fine layer of wax on the leaf surface, the coating that gives every blue hosta its colour. This medium-sized hosta shows that colour most strongly in shade.
Run it along a path, set it into a shady border or give it a large pot; several plants together join up as ground cover. Ferns, astilbes and other hostas suit it as companions. Our blue hostas bring together more varieties with this cool colouring.

A fine wax layer covers each leaf, and that coating gives the blue colour, as in every blue hosta. Shade keeps Buckshaw Blue at its bluest.
Buckshaw Blue is medium-sized. Plant it about 50 cm apart, a spacing that works for a border, an edging or ground cover.
Ferns, astilbes and other hostas all suit it. Among them, the blue leaves of Buckshaw Blue add a cool note to a shady bed.
Varieties
The best blue hostas range from the miniature Blue Mouse Ears to giants such as Big Daddy and Blue Angel. Their blue comes from a waxy coating that is thickest in spring and wears off in strong sun, heat and heavy rain, so plant them in shade or morning sun and water gently at the base. Varieties with a thick wax coat keep their colour longest.

Planting
Hostas grow best in moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Dig plenty of compost or well-rotted manure into the whole bed before planting: it helps clay drain and sandy soil hold water. Avoid ground that stays waterlogged, mulch every spring and feed lightly, because good soil matters more than fertiliser.
