Blue Cadet keeps its blue leaves on a compact plant, small to medium in size. This hosta belongs where you see it up close: beside a path, next to a doorstep or at the front of a shady bed.

Plant a row of it along a path, or give one plant a pot on a shaded terrace, where its cool colour can be enjoyed every day. Shade brings out the strongest blue. More plants for edging and containers are in our miniature and small hostas.

At a glance

  • Leaf colour: blue

Planting and care

  • Set Blue Cadet 30–50 cm apart for an unbroken blue edge along a path.
  • A pot for Blue Cadet needs holes in the base; check the compost often in warm weather.
  • The leaves stay bluest in shade, though partial shade suits this compact hosta as well.
  • Look for slugs and snails on the spring shoots, especially after a wet night.

Our hosta planting guide covers every step, from soil to winter.

Covered by our 100% growing guarantee: if a plant does not grow although you followed our care advice, we replace or refund it.

Hosta Blue Cadet: questions & answers

How big does Hosta Blue Cadet grow?

Blue Cadet stays compact, small to medium in size. Allow 30–50 cm between plants; at that distance a row grows into a continuous blue line.

Can Hosta Blue Cadet grow in a pot?

Yes, Blue Cadet is compact enough for a pot. Make sure the pot drains, and water it regularly, as compost in a container dries out quickly.

Where does Hosta Blue Cadet grow best?

In shade or partial shade. Shade keeps the leaves of Blue Cadet at their bluest, which shows well along a path.
