Big by name and by nature, Big Mama is a large hosta with cool blue leaves. Its quiet colour calms a busy shade planting, and its size lets it hold a place in the garden on its own.

Big Mama is a large hosta: allow 75–100 cm between plants, or give one plant a specimen spot with room all round.
Its blue is strongest in shade. Big Mama grows well in partial shade too, but deeper shade keeps the colour longer.
Ferns, astilbes and other hostas suit the ground in front of Big Mama, which then forms a blue background for the group.
Varieties
The best blue hostas range from the miniature Blue Mouse Ears to giants such as Big Daddy and Blue Angel. Their blue comes from a waxy coating that is thickest in spring and wears off in strong sun, heat and heavy rain, so plant them in shade or morning sun and water gently at the base. Varieties with a thick wax coat keep their colour longest.

Hostas and ferns are a natural pair: both like moist, humus-rich soil in partial or full shade, and the fine, divided fronds of a fern make the broad hosta leaf stand out. Choose ferns that suit your moisture, give each plant its full spacing and keep fast spreaders such as ostrich fern away from small hostas.

Propagation
Divide a hosta in early spring, when the pointed shoots are just breaking through, or in late summer as a second choice. Lift the whole clump, cut it with a sharp spade or knife into pieces that each have roots and one to three healthy buds, replant them at the same depth straight away and water well.
