American Sweetheart has cream leaves with a green margin, so the pale centre is what catches the eye in a shaded bed. It is a large hosta and an early variety, with the size to carry a corner of the garden on its own.
Let it stand alone, or place it behind ferns, astilbes or other hostas in a shady border. Its cream leaves are best kept out of hot afternoon sun. More pale-centred and pale-edged foliage is collected in our white and cream hostas.

American Sweetheart reaches a large size and needs 75–100 cm between plants. One plant makes a specimen; two can hold the back of a shady border.
American Sweetheart prefers shade or partial shade, and its cream leaves should stay out of hot afternoon sun.
Ferns, astilbes and other hostas work well around American Sweetheart, and plain green foliage makes its cream centres even more noticeable.
Design & companions
Hostas make an excellent ground cover for shade: planted closely, their leaves meet and suppress weeds from late spring until autumn. Choose medium-sized, vigorous varieties, plant them a little closer than in a border, mulch the gaps until the leaves close, and expect full cover after about three seasons.

Design & companions
A good shade border is built in layers: large hostas and tall partners at the back, medium hostas in the middle and small ones at the front. Repeat a few varieties in groups of three or five, contrast broad hosta leaves with fine ferns or grasses, and add spring bulbs for colour before the hostas wake.

Propagation
Divide a hosta in early spring, when the pointed shoots are just breaking through, or in late summer as a second choice. Lift the whole clump, cut it with a sharp spade or knife into pieces that each have roots and one to three healthy buds, replant them at the same depth straight away and water well.
