Thunderbolt sets a cream centre inside a blue margin, so a flash of light runs through the middle of every leaf, as its name suggests. This medium to large hosta has the scale to hold a shady border together.

The cream centre of each Thunderbolt leaf sits inside a blue margin, and that pale middle looks like a streak of light against the cooler edge.
Thunderbolt is medium to large, so plant it 50–75 cm apart. One plant also fits a large pot.
It grows in shade or partial shade and should be kept out of hot afternoon sun. Shade also keeps the blue margin of Thunderbolt at its strongest.
Varieties
The best blue hostas range from the miniature Blue Mouse Ears to giants such as Big Daddy and Blue Angel. Their blue comes from a waxy coating that is thickest in spring and wears off in strong sun, heat and heavy rain, so plant them in shade or morning sun and water gently at the base. Varieties with a thick wax coat keep their colour longest.

Planting
Hostas grow best in moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Dig plenty of compost or well-rotted manure into the whole bed before planting: it helps clay drain and sandy soil hold water. Avoid ground that stays waterlogged, mulch every spring and feed lightly, because good soil matters more than fertiliser.

Design & companions
A good shade border is built in layers: large hostas and tall partners at the back, medium hostas in the middle and small ones at the front. Repeat a few varieties in groups of three or five, contrast broad hosta leaves with fine ferns or grasses, and add spring bulbs for colour before the hostas wake.
