Loading the 3D view…

Neat and compact, Tambourine is a small to medium hosta with green leaves edged in white. The white rims show up clearly in shade, so even a short row of plants catches the eye from across the garden.

A row of Tambourine makes a crisp edging for a path; it also suits the front edge of a shady bed or a pot by the door. Because it stays compact, it fits places where bigger hostas would crowd the space. Browse our miniature and small hostas for more varieties of this size.

At a glance

  • Leaf colour: green centre, white margin
  • Size: small to medium
  • Light: shade or partial shade, no hot afternoon sun
  • Good for: borders, edging, pots

  • Arrives as: bare-root plants
  • Shipping: 1 March to 1 July; order all year round

Planting and care

  • Space Tambourine 30–50 cm apart; the closer distance gives a tighter edging along a path.
  • A pot for Tambourine needs drainage holes, and it will want water more often than plants in the ground.
  • Choose humus-rich soil where hot afternoon sun does not reach, and keep the crown level with the surface.
  • Look out for slugs and snails on the new spring shoots of Tambourine.

Our hosta planting guide covers every step, from soil to winter.

Covered by our 100% growing guarantee: if a plant does not grow although you followed our care advice, we replace or refund it.

How big does Hosta Tambourine get?

Tambourine stays compact: it is a small to medium hosta. Plant it 30–50 cm apart for edging, or grow it in a pot.

Can I grow Hosta Tambourine in a pot?

Yes, Tambourine suits a pot well because it stays compact. Pick one with holes in the base, give it a shaded or half-shaded spot and keep the compost moist.

Where should I plant Hosta Tambourine?

Close to where you walk or sit: beside a path or at the very front of a shady bed, so the white-edged leaves of Tambourine can be seen up close. Avoid hot afternoon sun.
