Bred in the Netherlands, Silver Feather is a medium-sized hosta whose green leaves emerge white, giving a shady border a pale start to the season. It has only recently joined our range.

Silver Feather has green leaves that emerge white, so the plant looks pale when it first appears in spring.
It was bred in the Netherlands, and Silver Feather is one of the newer varieties in our range.
Silver Feather suits a shady border, a path edge or a large pot; for ground cover, set several plants about 50 cm apart.
Planting
Hostas grow best in moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Dig plenty of compost or well-rotted manure into the whole bed before planting: it helps clay drain and sandy soil hold water. Avoid ground that stays waterlogged, mulch every spring and feed lightly, because good soil matters more than fertiliser.

Design & companions
Hostas make an excellent ground cover for shade: planted closely, their leaves meet and suppress weeds from late spring until autumn. Choose medium-sized, vigorous varieties, plant them a little closer than in a border, mulch the gaps until the leaves close, and expect full cover after about three seasons.

Planting
Yes, hostas can grow under trees, but the soil there is dry as well as shady, so plan for water. Choose thick-leaved or plain green varieties, plant small divisions in pockets between the roots without piling soil over them, mulch well and water deeply whenever it is dry, all through the first growing season.
