New in our range, Siberian Tiger is a medium-sized hosta with streaks running through its green leaves. The pattern is quiet rather than bold, so the plant makes a calm backdrop for shade plants in flower.
Grow it through a shady border, beside a path or in a large pot; a group planted together turns into a streaked green ground cover. Ferns and astilbes are natural partners, as are other hostas. It sits with the recent additions in our new hosta varieties.

Siberian Tiger grows in shade or partial shade, where it can fill a border, edge a path, live in a large pot or cover the ground. It also gives a calm background to flowering shade plants.

Planting
Hostas grow best in moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Dig plenty of compost or well-rotted manure into the whole bed before planting: it helps clay drain and sandy soil hold water. Avoid ground that stays waterlogged, mulch every spring and feed lightly, because good soil matters more than fertiliser.

Design & companions
Hostas make an excellent ground cover for shade: planted closely, their leaves meet and suppress weeds from late spring until autumn. Choose medium-sized, vigorous varieties, plant them a little closer than in a border, mulch the gaps until the leaves close, and expect full cover after about three seasons.

Planting
Yes, hostas can grow under trees, but the soil there is dry as well as shady, so plan for water. Choose thick-leaved or plain green varieties, plant small divisions in pockets between the roots without piling soil over them, mulch well and water deeply whenever it is dry, all through the first growing season.
