Thick, puckered blue leaves with a yellow margin make Samurai a large hosta with both texture and contrast. The yellow rim lightens the cool blue, while the heavy, textured leaf surface gives the clump a solid presence.
It can hold a spot on its own as a specimen, or anchor a shady border with smaller plants around it. In shade the blue of Samurai is at its strongest. More cool-coloured varieties are collected in our blue hostas.

Varieties
The best blue hostas range from the miniature Blue Mouse Ears to giants such as Big Daddy and Blue Angel. Their blue comes from a waxy coating that is thickest in spring and wears off in strong sun, heat and heavy rain, so plant them in shade or morning sun and water gently at the base. Varieties with a thick wax coat keep their colour longest.

Care & seasons
Hostas need about 4 cm of water a week in summer, roughly 40 litres per square metre including rain. Water deeply at the base of the plant, preferably in the morning, whenever the top few centimetres of soil are dry. New plants, hostas under trees and hostas in pots need checking most often; a mulch keeps the soil moist for longer.

Design & companions
A good shade border is built in layers: large hostas and tall partners at the back, medium hostas in the middle and small ones at the front. Repeat a few varieties in groups of three or five, contrast broad hosta leaves with fine ferns or grasses, and add spring bulbs for colour before the hostas wake.
