Look closely at Revolution and the white leaf centres turn out to be speckled, set inside a dark green margin. From a distance this medium-sized hosta simply looks bright; up close the fine pattern comes through.
That detail repays a place near a path or a large pot by a bench. In a shady border or a ground-cover group it adds light, and ferns, astilbes and other hostas make good companions. It belongs to our variegated hostas.

They have speckled white centres and dark green margins. Revolution is medium-sized, so the pattern is easy to see beside a path or in a pot.
Revolution is a plant for shade or partial shade. Choose a spot that is shaded later in the day, as hot afternoon sun does not suit its white centres.
Ferns, astilbes and other hostas all work, and dark green neighbours make the white centres of Revolution look even paler.
Planting
Hostas grow best in moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Dig plenty of compost or well-rotted manure into the whole bed before planting: it helps clay drain and sandy soil hold water. Avoid ground that stays waterlogged, mulch every spring and feed lightly, because good soil matters more than fertiliser.

Design & companions
Hostas make an excellent ground cover for shade: planted closely, their leaves meet and suppress weeds from late spring until autumn. Choose medium-sized, vigorous varieties, plant them a little closer than in a border, mulch the gaps until the leaves close, and expect full cover after about three seasons.

A good shade border is built in layers: large hostas and tall partners at the back, medium hostas in the middle and small ones at the front. Repeat a few varieties in groups of three or five, contrast broad hosta leaves with fine ferns or grasses, and add spring bulbs for colour before the hostas wake.
