Pathfinder has speckled leaves with a white centre and a green margin, so there is detail to discover up close as well as contrast from a distance. It is a medium-sized hosta for shade.
As the name suggests, a path is a good place for it, where the speckling can be seen as you pass; it also suits a border, a large pot or a ground-cover group. Plant ferns and astilbes alongside, or other hostas. More white-centred leaves are in our white and cream hostas.

Pathfinder needs shade or partial shade, with no hot afternoon sun. Beside a path it shows off its speckled leaves; borders, large pots and ground cover suit it too.

Planting
Hostas grow best in moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Dig plenty of compost or well-rotted manure into the whole bed before planting: it helps clay drain and sandy soil hold water. Avoid ground that stays waterlogged, mulch every spring and feed lightly, because good soil matters more than fertiliser.

Design & companions
Hostas make an excellent ground cover for shade: planted closely, their leaves meet and suppress weeds from late spring until autumn. Choose medium-sized, vigorous varieties, plant them a little closer than in a border, mulch the gaps until the leaves close, and expect full cover after about three seasons.

Design & companions
A good shade border is built in layers: large hostas and tall partners at the back, medium hostas in the middle and small ones at the front. Repeat a few varieties in groups of three or five, contrast broad hosta leaves with fine ferns or grasses, and add spring bulbs for colour before the hostas wake.
