Thick, puckered leaves give Northern Exposure a strong texture, and each blue leaf is edged in cream. It is a medium to large hosta, so that mix of texture and contrast is shown on a generous scale.

In a shady border it adds weight, and in a large container on a terrace it shows off the leaf texture at close range. Ferns and astilbes, with other hostas, complete the picture. For other blue-leaved varieties, see our blue hostas.

Planting and care

  • Plant Northern Exposure 50–75 cm apart; the clumps fill the gap as they mature.
  • Shade or partial shade suits the thick blue leaves; keep them away from hot afternoon sun.
  • For a container, Northern Exposure needs a generous pot with drainage holes, and compost kept evenly moist.
  • Before the puckered leaves of Northern Exposure unfold in spring, keep slugs and snails off the shoots.

Our hosta planting guide covers every step, from soil to winter.

Covered by our 100% growing guarantee: if a plant does not grow although you followed our care advice, we replace or refund it.
