In Morning Star, the light sits in the middle of the leaf: a yellow centre surrounded by a green margin. This medium-sized hosta also has good slug resistance, a bonus in a damp shady garden.

Its yellow centres show up well along a path or in a border; alone, it fills a large pot, while a group makes bright ground cover among ferns, astilbes or other hostas. More varieties that resist slugs are in our slug-resistant hostas.

At a glance

  • Leaf colour: yellow centre, green margin
  • Size: medium
  • Light: partial shade, with some morning sun for the strongest colour
  • Good for: borders, edging, ground cover, large pots
  • Features: good slug resistance
  • Pack: 2 plants of the same variety, from the Netherlands
  • Arrives as: bare-root plants
  • Shipping: 1 March to 1 July; order all year round

Planting and care

  • Give Morning Star about 50 cm per plant in partial shade, where morning sun livens up the yellow but the afternoon heat does not reach.
  • In dry weeks, water Morning Star at the base and mulch the soil, keeping the yellow-centred leaves dry.
  • Humus-rich soil that stays moist yet drains gives this plant a good start; keep the crown at ground level.
  • Slug resistance is good, yet the young spring shoots of Morning Star deserve a quick check.

Our hosta planting guide covers every step, from soil to winter.

Covered by our 100% growing guarantee: if a plant does not grow although you followed our care advice, we replace or refund it.

Hosta Morning Star: questions & answers

Is Hosta Morning Star slug resistant?

Yes, Morning Star has leaves with good slug resistance. The tender new shoots are the exception, so look them over in spring.

How much sun can Hosta Morning Star take?

Morning sun is fine and makes the yellow centres glow, but hot afternoon sun is too much. Partial shade suits Morning Star best.

How far apart should I plant Hosta Morning Star?

Leave about 50 cm from plant to plant. In a ground-cover group of Morning Star, the clumps then meet as they grow.
