The blue of Moody Blues comes from a fine waxy layer on each leaf, as it does on every blue hosta. Grown in shade, this medium-sized plant keeps that cool colour at its strongest.

A shaded border, the edge of a walk or a large pot on a north-facing terrace all suit it, and several plants together will cover the ground. Plant ferns and astilbes around it, or mix it with other hostas. Other varieties in the same cool colour are in our blue hostas.

Planting and care

  • Choose shade for Moody Blues if you can; partial shade also works, but the blue lasts longer with less light.
  • Leave about 50 cm between plants of Moody Blues and set each crown at soil level.
  • In dry spells, water the soil rather than the waxy blue leaves.
  • Slugs and snails head for the spring shoots of Moody Blues, so watch them closely after wet nights.

Our hosta planting guide covers every step, from soil to winter.

Covered by our 100% growing guarantee: if a plant does not grow although you followed our care advice, we replace or refund it.

Hosta Moody Blues at a glance

Hosta Moody Blues: questions & answers

Why are the leaves of Hosta Moody Blues blue?

A fine waxy coating gives Moody Blues its colour, as with all blue hostas. In shade, the blue stays strongest for longest.

Where should I plant Hosta Moody Blues?

In shade, ideally, or partial shade: the less sun Moody Blues receives, the longer its leaves stay blue. Borders, path edges and large pots all work.

What can I grow with Hosta Moody Blues?

Plant it beside ferns and astilbes, or with hostas in other colours; their fronds and flowers sit well against the blue leaves of Moody Blues.
