Despite its playful name, Marmalade on Toast is a hosta of calm, plain green leaves. The foliage is one colour throughout, which makes this medium-sized plant a steady background for the flowers of its neighbours.
Its uses are many: a line of plants beside a path, a group in a shady border, a single clump in a big pot, or several set close together as ground cover. Ferns, astilbes and other hostas sit comfortably beside it. More single-colour foliage is gathered in our green hostas.

Marmalade on Toast reaches a medium size. About 50 cm from one plant to the next gives each clump room, whether it edges a path or covers the ground.

Planting
Hostas grow best in moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Dig plenty of compost or well-rotted manure into the whole bed before planting: it helps clay drain and sandy soil hold water. Avoid ground that stays waterlogged, mulch every spring and feed lightly, because good soil matters more than fertiliser.

Design & companions
Hostas make an excellent ground cover for shade: planted closely, their leaves meet and suppress weeds from late spring until autumn. Choose medium-sized, vigorous varieties, plant them a little closer than in a border, mulch the gaps until the leaves close, and expect full cover after about three seasons.

Planting
Yes, hostas can grow under trees, but the soil there is dry as well as shady, so plan for water. Choose thick-leaved or plain green varieties, plant small divisions in pockets between the roots without piling soil over them, mulch well and water deeply whenever it is dry, all through the first growing season.
