Each leaf of Margie's Angel has a yellow-green centre held inside a blue-green margin, so the plant looks pale and cool at once. It is a large hosta, and given room the contrast carries across a whole bed.

Margie's Angel is a large hosta, so plan on 75–100 cm between plants. It suits a specimen spot or the heart of a shady border.
The centres are yellow-green, the margins blue-green. That pale middle shows clearly against the darker rim, which keeps the clump of Margie's Angel bright in shade.
Choose a shaded or half-shaded place that the hot afternoon sun cannot reach. A spot of its own, or the back half of a border, gives Margie's Angel the space a large hosta needs.
Varieties
The best blue hostas range from the miniature Blue Mouse Ears to giants such as Big Daddy and Blue Angel. Their blue comes from a waxy coating that is thickest in spring and wears off in strong sun, heat and heavy rain, so plant them in shade or morning sun and water gently at the base. Varieties with a thick wax coat keep their colour longest.

Care & seasons
Hostas need about 4 cm of water a week in summer, roughly 40 litres per square metre including rain. Water deeply at the base of the plant, preferably in the morning, whenever the top few centimetres of soil are dry. New plants, hostas under trees and hostas in pots need checking most often; a mulch keeps the soil moist for longer.

Design & companions
A good shade border is built in layers: large hostas and tall partners at the back, medium hostas in the middle and small ones at the front. Repeat a few varieties in groups of three or five, contrast broad hosta leaves with fine ferns or grasses, and add spring bulbs for colour before the hostas wake.
