Thick, puckered and blue, the leaves of Love Pat have a texture that rewards a close look. This medium-sized hosta brings a calm, cool note to the shade garden.
Grow it in a large pot or beside a path where the puckered surface can be seen, or mass several plants as textured ground cover in a shady border. In shade the blue is strongest. More blue foliage can be found in our blue hostas.

They are thick, puckered and blue. That rugose texture gives Love Pat a sculpted look in a shady border.
Shade keeps the leaves of Love Pat at their bluest; partial shade works too, with a little less intensity.

Varieties
The best blue hostas range from the miniature Blue Mouse Ears to giants such as Big Daddy and Blue Angel. Their blue comes from a waxy coating that is thickest in spring and wears off in strong sun, heat and heavy rain, so plant them in shade or morning sun and water gently at the base. Varieties with a thick wax coat keep their colour longest.

Planting
Hostas grow best in moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Dig plenty of compost or well-rotted manure into the whole bed before planting: it helps clay drain and sandy soil hold water. Avoid ground that stays waterlogged, mulch every spring and feed lightly, because good soil matters more than fertiliser.
