Collectors look for Hyuga Urajiro because of its leaves: this small hosta has streaked, spear-shaped foliage in blue-green. As on every blue hosta, a fine wax on the leaf surface gives the colour its cool cast.
Plant it where the pointed leaves can be seen at close range, beside a path or near the front of a shady bed, or give it a pot. A group makes ground cover, and ferns, astilbes or other hostas suit it well. More cool-toned foliage is in our blue hostas.

A fine waxy coating creates that tone, as it does on every blue hosta. In shade, the blue-green of Hyuga Urajiro stays strongest.
Hyuga Urajiro stays small, up to about 30 cm tall, so about 30 cm between plants is enough in a border or beside a path; one plant also suits a pot.
Its streaked, spear-shaped blue-green leaves. That shape is why Hyuga Urajiro is regarded as a collector’s item.
Varieties
The best blue hostas range from the miniature Blue Mouse Ears to giants such as Big Daddy and Blue Angel. Their blue comes from a waxy coating that is thickest in spring and wears off in strong sun, heat and heavy rain, so plant them in shade or morning sun and water gently at the base. Varieties with a thick wax coat keep their colour longest.

Design & companions
Hostas make an excellent ground cover for shade: planted closely, their leaves meet and suppress weeds from late spring until autumn. Choose medium-sized, vigorous varieties, plant them a little closer than in a border, mulch the gaps until the leaves close, and expect full cover after about three seasons.

A good shade border is built in layers: large hostas and tall partners at the back, medium hostas in the middle and small ones at the front. Repeat a few varieties in groups of three or five, contrast broad hosta leaves with fine ferns or grasses, and add spring bulbs for colour before the hostas wake.
