Red is not a colour people expect from a hosta, which makes First Blush worth a closer look. This medium-sized variety has red leaves and is marketed as the first hosta to have them.
Put it where it will be noticed: beside a path, in a large pot near the house or in a shady border, where ferns, astilbes and other hostas set off the red. Planted as a group, it also covers the ground. Other varieties of this size are listed under our medium hostas.

Red. It is sold as the first hosta with leaves of that colour, so First Blush brings something unexpected to a shady border.
It reaches a medium size. Leave about 50 cm between plants of First Blush along a path, in a border or in a ground-cover group, or give one a large pot.
Ferns and astilbes suit it, and so do other hostas. Their foliage frames the red leaves of First Blush and makes the colour stand out.
Planting
Hostas grow best in moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Dig plenty of compost or well-rotted manure into the whole bed before planting: it helps clay drain and sandy soil hold water. Avoid ground that stays waterlogged, mulch every spring and feed lightly, because good soil matters more than fertiliser.
