In Chain Lightning, a bright white centre sits inside a darker green margin, and the contrast is easy to see across a shady garden. This medium-sized hosta adapts to borders, path edges and pots alike.
Plant it along a path or at the front of a shady border, or group several as ground cover, out of hot afternoon sun. A single plant also makes a fine feature in a large pot. More two-tone leaves are among our variegated hostas.
Our hosta planting guide covers every step, from soil to winter.
Covered by our 100% growing guarantee: if a plant does not grow although you followed our care advice, we replace or refund it.

Each leaf has a white centre and a green margin. The bright middle stands out against the darker edge, so Chain Lightning lights up a shady bed.
Leave about 50 cm from one Chain Lightning to the next; that suits a medium-sized hosta, whether it edges a path or covers the ground.
Yes, give Chain Lightning a large pot with holes in the base. Stand it out of hot afternoon sun and water it regularly.
Planting
Hostas grow best in moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Dig plenty of compost or well-rotted manure into the whole bed before planting: it helps clay drain and sandy soil hold water. Avoid ground that stays waterlogged, mulch every spring and feed lightly, because good soil matters more than fertiliser.

Hostas make an excellent ground cover for shade: planted closely, their leaves meet and suppress weeds from late spring until autumn. Choose medium-sized, vigorous varieties, plant them a little closer than in a border, mulch the gaps until the leaves close, and expect full cover after about three seasons.

A good shade border is built in layers: large hostas and tall partners at the back, medium hostas in the middle and small ones at the front. Repeat a few varieties in groups of three or five, contrast broad hosta leaves with fine ferns or grasses, and add spring bulbs for colour before the hostas wake.
