Canadian Blue packs cool blue colour into a compact plant, small to medium in size. That modest scale makes this hosta easy to fit into narrow beds, along paths and into containers.

A row of it gives a path a neat blue edge, and a few plants at the front of a shady border lead the eye towards taller plants behind. One plant fills a pot on a shaded balcony or step. More compact varieties are among our miniature and small hostas.

At a glance

  • Leaf colour: blue
  • Size: small to medium
  • Light: shade or partial shade; bluest in shade
  • Good for: edging, the front of a border, pots
  • Pack: 2 plants of the same variety, from the Netherlands
  • Arrives as: bare-root plants
  • Shipping: 1 March to 1 July; order all year round

Planting and care

  • Space Canadian Blue 30–50 cm apart; the closer spacing gives an unbroken edge sooner.
  • Canadian Blue holds its colour longest in shade, but partial shade suits it as well.
  • For a pot, pick one with holes in the base, fill it with good potting compost and check it often in summer.
  • Slugs and snails are drawn to young shoots, so inspect this small hosta closely in spring.

Our hosta planting guide covers every step, from soil to winter.

Covered by our 100% growing guarantee: if a plant does not grow although you followed our care advice, we replace or refund it.

Hosta Canadian Blue: questions & answers

How big does Hosta Canadian Blue get?

It stays compact, small to medium in size. Plant Canadian Blue 30–50 cm apart for an edging or a group at the front of a border.

Is Hosta Canadian Blue good in pots?

Yes, its compact size suits a pot. Choose one with drainage holes and water Canadian Blue regularly, as containers dry out faster than beds.

Does Hosta Canadian Blue need shade?

Shade or partial shade suits it. In shade, Canadian Blue keeps its blue colour at its strongest.
