Antioch edges its green leaves in cream, a light outline that makes each leaf easy to pick out in the shade. As a medium to large hosta, it builds a full clump in a border or a large pot.

Use it to fill a gap in a shady border, or make it the main plant in a container. Ferns, astilbes and other hostas are good company for it, and a position away from hot afternoon sun suits it best. Antioch is one of our variegated hostas; for more cream, see our white and cream hostas.

Planting and care

  • Allow 50–75 cm per plant, so Antioch has room to fill out.
  • Pick a shady or half-shady spot for Antioch, away from strong afternoon sun.
  • Pot-grown plants need a large container that drains at the base, plus extra watering in warm weather.
  • Mulch spread after planting helps the soil around Antioch stay moist in dry weeks.

Our hosta planting guide covers every step, from soil to winter.

Covered by our 100% growing guarantee: if a plant does not grow although you followed our care advice, we replace or refund it.

Hosta Antioch: questions & answers

How big does Hosta Antioch get?

Antioch grows from medium to large, so a spacing of 50–75 cm works in the border; in a pot, choose a large one.

Is Hosta Antioch suitable for pots?

Yes, given a large pot, Antioch makes a good container plant. Make sure the pot drains freely and water more often than in a bed.

How much sun can Hosta Antioch take?

Antioch grows in shade, or in a bed with morning light and afternoon shade, but not in hot afternoon sun.
