Ripple Effect started life as a twisted sport of Hosta 'June'. It is a compact hosta, small to medium in size, whose leaves are yellow in the centre and green at the margin.
That size suits the places you pass every day: a path edging, the front of a bed in shade or a pot by the door. A little morning sun keeps the centres bright. More light-centred varieties are in our yellow and gold hostas.

Ripple Effect arose as a twisted sport of Hosta 'June'; it has yellow-centred leaves with green margins on a compact plant.
It is small to medium. Plant Ripple Effect 30–50 cm apart in a bed, or grow a single plant in a pot.
In partial shade with some morning sun, which keeps the yellow centres bright. Path edges, the front of a border and pots all suit it.
Care & seasons
Hostas need about 4 cm of water a week in summer, roughly 40 litres per square metre including rain. Water deeply at the base of the plant, preferably in the morning, whenever the top few centimetres of soil are dry. New plants, hostas under trees and hostas in pots need checking most often; a mulch keeps the soil moist for longer.

Planting
Hostas grow best in moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Dig plenty of compost or well-rotted manure into the whole bed before planting: it helps clay drain and sandy soil hold water. Avoid ground that stays waterlogged, mulch every spring and feed lightly, because good soil matters more than fertiliser.

Design & companions
Hostas make an excellent ground cover for shade: planted closely, their leaves meet and suppress weeds from late spring until autumn. Choose medium-sized, vigorous varieties, plant them a little closer than in a border, mulch the gaps until the leaves close, and expect full cover after about three seasons.
