White at the heart and blue-green at the rim, the leaves of Popcorn read as pale shapes in a shady bed. This medium to large hosta has real substance, yet its light centres keep the clump from looking heavy.
Set it in the middle of a shady border to give the planting body, or grow a single plant in a large container. Ferns, astilbes and darker-leaved hostas make good neighbours for its white centres. More pale-centred varieties are in our white and cream hostas.

Popcorn forms a medium to large clump. Plant it 50–75 cm from its neighbours so the white-centred leaves have space to spread.
Yes, give Popcorn a big container with holes in the base and water it regularly, since pots dry out sooner than a border.
Ferns and astilbes are good partners for Popcorn, and other hostas with darker leaves make its white centres look even brighter.
Varieties
The best blue hostas range from the miniature Blue Mouse Ears to giants such as Big Daddy and Blue Angel. Their blue comes from a waxy coating that is thickest in spring and wears off in strong sun, heat and heavy rain, so plant them in shade or morning sun and water gently at the base. Varieties with a thick wax coat keep their colour longest.

Planting
Hostas grow best in moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Dig plenty of compost or well-rotted manure into the whole bed before planting: it helps clay drain and sandy soil hold water. Avoid ground that stays waterlogged, mulch every spring and feed lightly, because good soil matters more than fertiliser.

Design & companions
Hostas make an excellent ground cover for shade: planted closely, their leaves meet and suppress weeds from late spring until autumn. Choose medium-sized, vigorous varieties, plant them a little closer than in a border, mulch the gaps until the leaves close, and expect full cover after about three seasons.
