Frances Williams sets a yellow margin around a blue centre, a contrast that reads well in shade. This medium to large hosta builds a generous clump that fills its share of a border.

Plant it among other shade plants in a border, or give it a large pot of its own on a shaded terrace. Shade keeps the blue part of each leaf at its strongest. Explore more two-tone foliage among our variegated hostas.

Planting and care

  • Space plants 50–75 cm apart so the blue and yellow clumps have room to fill out.
  • Shade or partial shade protects the colour of the blue centre.
  • If you grow Frances Williams in a container, use a large pot with drainage holes and water it regularly.
  • In spring, check the emerging shoots of this blue hosta for slugs and snails.

Our hosta planting guide covers every step, from soil to winter.

Covered by our 100% growing guarantee: if a plant does not grow although you followed our care advice, we replace or refund it.

Hosta Frances Williams: questions & answers

How big does Hosta Frances Williams get?

Frances Williams grows medium to large. Plant 50–75 cm apart, or give one plant a large pot of its own.

Does Hosta Frances Williams like sun or shade?

Frances Williams prefers shade or partial shade, where its blue centre keeps its colour longest, framed by the yellow edge.

Can Hosta Frances Williams grow in a pot?

Yes, a large pot with drainage holes suits Frances Williams, as long as you water it regularly; containers dry out faster than borders.
