New to our range, Forbidden Fruit® is a tetraploid version of Hosta 'Orange Marmalade'. Its yellow leaves are edged in blue, and the pale centre almost glows when this hosta grows in partial shade.

A medium to large plant, it gives weight to a border and does just as well in a large container. In partial shade with some morning sun the yellow is at its brightest; afternoon heat is best avoided. Ferns, astilbes and other hostas keep it good company. Forbidden Fruit® joins the other newcomers in our new hosta varieties.

At a glance

  • Leaf colour: yellow centre, blue margin
  • Size: medium to large
  • Light: partial shade; some morning sun, no hot afternoon sun
  • Good for: borders, large pots
  • Companions: ferns, astilbes, other hostas
  • Pack: 2 plants of the same variety, from the Netherlands
  • Arrives as: bare-root plants
  • Shipping: 1 March to 1 July; order all year round

Planting and care

  • Allow 50–75 cm between plants so that each Forbidden Fruit® can fill out.
  • A mulch over the soil helps Forbidden Fruit® through dry weather; water at the base when needed.
  • Grown in a container, it needs a large pot with holes in the base and regular watering through summer.
  • Slugs and snails like young shoots; check Forbidden Fruit® on damp spring evenings.

Our hosta planting guide covers every step, from soil to winter.

Covered by our 100% growing guarantee: if a plant does not grow although you followed our care advice, we replace or refund it.

  5. Keep the soil moist, especially in the first year.
  6. Protect the young shoots from slugs and snails in spring.

Hosta Forbidden Fruit®: questions & answers

How much sun can Hosta Forbidden Fruit® take?

Some morning sun is fine and brightens the yellow, but Forbidden Fruit® should be shaded from hot afternoon sun, so partial shade is ideal.

How is Hosta Forbidden Fruit® related to Orange Marmalade?

It is a tetraploid version of Hosta 'Orange Marmalade', with yellow leaves edged in blue. Forbidden Fruit® is a new addition to our range.

Can Hosta Forbidden Fruit® grow in a pot?

Yes, as long as the pot is large and has drainage holes. Keep up the watering, as compost in a container dries out faster than a border.
