Yellow and green share each leaf of First Dance: a yellow centre that turns chartreuse and a green margin. The effect is fresh rather than loud, and this medium-sized hosta blends easily into a shade planting of mixed foliage.

Edge a path with it, fill a gap in a shady border or plant a large pot. Several together make ground cover, with ferns, astilbes and other hostas as good companions. It is one of the patterned varieties in our variegated hostas.

Planting and care

  • Allow about 50 cm for each First Dance, so the clumps of a ground-cover group meet without crowding.
  • It grows in shade as well as in partial shade, given humus-rich soil that holds moisture.
  • Keep the soil evenly moist through the first year, watering at the base of the plant.
  • Slugs and snails feed on young hosta shoots, so check First Dance after wet spring nights.

Our hosta planting guide covers every step, from soil to winter.

Covered by our 100% growing guarantee: if a plant does not grow although you followed our care advice, we replace or refund it.

Hosta First Dance: questions & answers

What do the leaves of Hosta First Dance look like?

Yellow in the middle, turning chartreuse, and green around the edge. That pairing of yellow and green gives First Dance a fresh, quietly patterned look in shade.

How far apart should I plant Hosta First Dance?

About 50 cm. For edging a path, keep to that distance in a straight line; for ground cover, plant First Dance in a loose group.

What grows well with Hosta First Dance?

Good partners are ferns, astilbes and other hostas, especially ones with plain or contrasting leaves that show off the two-tone pattern of First Dance.
