New to our range, Climax is a large hosta whose blue-green leaves carry a yellow margin. The yellow edges brighten a shady corner, while the blue-green centre holds its colour longest in shade.
It has the size to stand alone as a specimen, and it can anchor a shady border as its backbone. The two plants in a pack can flank a gateway or stand at either end of a long border. More cool-toned leaves are found among our blue hostas.

Climax grows large, so allow 75–100 cm per plant. At that spacing it has room to develop into a full specimen clump.
Shade or partial shade is right for Climax. The more shade it gets, the longer its blue-green colour lasts.
As a specimen on its own, or as the backbone of a shady border. Its size and yellow-edged leaves give a planting a clear focal point.
Varieties
The best blue hostas range from the miniature Blue Mouse Ears to giants such as Big Daddy and Blue Angel. Their blue comes from a waxy coating that is thickest in spring and wears off in strong sun, heat and heavy rain, so plant them in shade or morning sun and water gently at the base. Varieties with a thick wax coat keep their colour longest.

Care & seasons
Hostas need about 4 cm of water a week in summer, roughly 40 litres per square metre including rain. Water deeply at the base of the plant, preferably in the morning, whenever the top few centimetres of soil are dry. New plants, hostas under trees and hostas in pots need checking most often; a mulch keeps the soil moist for longer.

Design & companions
Hostas make an excellent ground cover for shade: planted closely, their leaves meet and suppress weeds from late spring until autumn. Choose medium-sized, vigorous varieties, plant them a little closer than in a border, mulch the gaps until the leaves close, and expect full cover after about three seasons.
